Google announces enhanced security features for Android 17
Google is introducing a suite of advanced security upgrades for the upcoming Android 17 operating system, designed to combat espionage, fraud, and physical theft. A central component is the “Advanced Protection” mode, which implements strict system restrictions, such as blocking non-Play Store software installations and limiting connections to insecure wireless networks.
Key technical features include “Intrusion Logging,” which maintains an encrypted, cloud-synced record of sensitive activities like app installations for up to 12 months to assist in digital forensics. To prevent data theft via physical access, “USB Port Protection” will restrict peripherals to power delivery only when the device is locked. Additionally, “Accessibility Protection” will restrict the use of AccessibilityServices for unverified apps to prevent screen reading and unauthorized financial transactions.
To combat theft, a new “Lock Quick Settings connectivity” feature allows users to prevent the disabling of Wi-Fi, mobile data, or Airplane Mode from the lock screen, making it harder for thieves to disconnect a device from tracking services. Furthermore, Google is integrating AI-driven tools like “Circle to Search” to help users identify fraudulent text messages by providing instant analysis of suspicious links or impersonation attempts without requiring direct interaction with the message.
