Google restructures Gemini AI access and announces Gemini 4 Argon

Google is implementing significant changes to its Gemini AI service, restructuring model access based on subscription tiers. Starting October 9, 2026, free users will be restricted to the Gemini Flash-Lite model, losing access to the Flash and Pro models.

Users with the Google AI Plus subscription will retain access to Flash and Flash-Lite but will lose access to the Pro model. Higher-tier subscribers, including Google AI Pro and AI Ultra, will maintain access to all models, including Flash, Flash-Lite, and Pro. Additionally, AI Pro subscribers will gain access to Deep Think, a feature for complex parallel reasoning previously reserved for Ultra users.

To manage computational resources, Google is also introducing effort levels—low, medium, and high—allowing users to control the depth of model responses, though higher levels will consume usage quotas more quickly.

In a separate development, Google DeepMind announced the Gemini 4 Argon model. Designed for complex workflows in software engineering, finance, and cybersecurity, Argon features an output capacity of up to 1 million tokens. It is currently being rolled out through the Fairwind Program to select partners, including government agencies and cybersecurity defenders.
