Google announces Googlebooks premium laptop category with Android OS

Google has announced the launch of Googlebooks, a new category of premium laptops designed to bridge the gap between Android smartphones and desktop computing. Unlike previous Chromebooks, Googlebooks run on a native Android-based operating system that integrates deeply with the Android ecosystem, allowing for seamless transitions between mobile and desktop tasks through features like 'Continue on' and 'Cast my Apps'.

The initial rollout includes five models from major manufacturers: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. These devices will feature premium hardware, including OLED displays, metal constructions, and a distinctive 'Glowbar' light on the lid to indicate status. The lineup will utilize both Intel Core Ultra Series 3 and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processors, with the latter offering high-performance NPU capabilities for local AI tasks via Gemini Intelligence.

Pre-orders are open, with the first models scheduled to arrive in the United States on October 4, 2026. The launch will expand to Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia shortly thereafter. Pricing for the new category starts at US$899 for the Acer Googlebook 14, with other premium models ranging from US$1,199 to US$1,589.
