Google announces healthcare AI initiative and research hub in Singapore
At the inaugural Google for Health Summit in Singapore, Google announced a comprehensive plan to integrate frontier AI across the nation's healthcare system. A central component of this initiative is the establishment of a new Google Research hub in Singapore, which will focus on foundational AI efficiency and the development of local scientific talent through partnerships with the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.
The initiative includes several key clinical and research projects:
• Google DeepMind is collaborating with the National University Health System to evaluate an AI clinician assistant designed to support doctors by synthesizing medical literature and clinical guidelines. • Google Cloud is working with NHG Health on a population health program that uses predictive models to identify health risks within specific sub-populations. • The company plans to deploy MedGemma, an open model, to frontline care settings to enable the development of secure, customized tools while maintaining data sovereignty.
Additionally, Google.org and Google DeepMind have contributed $7 million to the Philanthropy Asia Alliance’s Health for Human Potential Coalition. This funding includes $1 million for PathGen, a public health intelligence platform aimed at advancing research into genomic embeddings to facilitate secure genomic data sharing.
