Google automatically links phone numbers to Android accounts
Google has implemented a policy that automatically verifies and links mobile phone numbers to all active Google accounts on Android devices. This change, which occurred between August and October 2025, utilizes a "Verify phone numbers automatically" setting that is enabled by default.
Under this update, any Google account used on a device—including personal, work, or alternative accounts—is potentially unified under a single verified phone number. This applies to existing accounts as well as any new accounts added in the future. While Google cites technical benefits such as easier account recovery and faster device setup, the move has raised privacy concerns because it occurs without explicit user consent for each individual account.
Users can opt out of this automatic linking by navigating to Settings, selecting Google Services, and disabling the "Phone number verification" slider under Privacy & Security. However, disabling the feature does not automatically remove numbers already linked to accounts; users must manually disconnect them through their Google Account Personal Info settings.
