Google avoids ad tech breakup as US judge rejects DOJ divestiture request
A U.S. federal judge has rejected the Department of Justice's request to force Google to divest parts of its digital advertising business, including its AdX exchange and publisher ad server. In a ruling from the Eastern District of Virginia, Judge Leonie Brinkema opted for behavioral remedies rather than the structural breakup sought by the government.
This decision follows a previous ruling in which the court found that Google had illegally maintained monopolies in the publisher ad server and ad exchange markets. While the company will not be forced to sell its assets, it must implement new rules to govern its advertising operations and improve competition. These remedies may include providing competitors with real-time bid data or ending certain exclusivity privileges.
The judge's full written opinion remains under seal for 14 days to allow for the redaction of confidential information. Google and the Department of Justice have been granted 30 days to submit a joint proposed final judgment.
