Google begins replacing Assistant with Gemini AI on Android

Google has begun a progressive rollout to replace Google Assistant with its generative AI, Gemini, on Android mobile devices and tablets. The transition started on September 4 and may take several weeks to reach all eligible users.

When the migration reaches a specific account and device, Gemini becomes the default assistant. Once this change occurs, users will no longer be able to switch back to the classic Google Assistant. The update also extends to connected devices such as Wear OS watches, compatible headphones, and Android Auto systems that rely on the phone.

While Gemini offers advanced capabilities like natural conversation, context awareness, and the ability to process text, images, and voice, some users have reported that certain basic functions previously handled by Google Assistant, such as specific routines or timers, may behave differently during the transition.

Certain hardware categories are currently excluded from this immediate mobile rollout, including Google Nest and Google Home smart speakers and displays, as well as factory-integrated automotive systems. To run the Gemini mobile app, devices require Android 9 or higher and at least 2 GB of memory.
