Google cancels AI Studio mobile app after 800,000 preorders
Google announced on July 31, 2026 that it will not release the standalone AI Studio mobile app that had attracted roughly 800,000 pre‑orders on iOS and Android across more than 168 countries. The company said it will instead embed the app‑building capabilities directly into its Gemini app, allowing users to prototype applications through conversational prompts. The AI Studio website will stay active for desktop users who need more advanced, production‑ready tools.
The move is presented as a consolidation strategy to reduce the number of separate AI‑focused products in Google’s portfolio, which already includes Gemini, Antigravity, DeepMind and Gemma. Reactions were mixed: some welcomed a single‑app experience, while others expressed frustration at the cancellation after pre‑ordering the dedicated tool.
