Google caps Android PIN unlock attempts at 20 and rolls out Android 17 beta update

Google announced a major tightening of Android's lock‑screen security. Starting with Android 16 QPR2 and continued in Android 17, the system will allow only 20 incorrect PIN entries over a device’s lifetime, down from thousands of attempts in earlier versions. After the 20th failed entry the phone blocks further attempts. The change includes detection of repeated identical wrong entries, which are excluded from the total count, and clearer on‑screen messages showing remaining lock‑out time.

In parallel, Google released Android 17 QPR1 Beta 6 for Pixel devices. The update adds native health tracking through Health Connect, a redesigned Settings icon inspired by Pixel Watch, and a refreshed wallpaper picker. It also reaches a platform‑stability milestone with all key APIs frozen, and fixes numerous bugs such as multi‑language spell‑check, volume‑button handling, media‑player UI glitches, a critical WindowManagerGlobal crash, and Wi‑Fi hotspot SSID naming.

Both changes aim to improve user security, functionality, and overall device reliability for Android users worldwide.
