Google Chrome Requires 20 GB Free Space for On‑Device Gemini AI

Google has updated Chrome’s support pages to state that the browser will only download its on‑device AI models, such as the Gemini Nano, if the device has roughly 20 GB of free storage. The Gemini Nano itself occupies about 4 GB, but Chrome reserves additional space to unpack, update and manage the model. The browser also checks for an unmetered internet connection and sufficient hardware performance before initiating the download. Users can disable the “On‑device AI” option in Chrome’s system settings, which removes the model and prevents future background downloads, freeing up the occupied space.

At the same time, Google is rolling out UI changes that make Gemini more accessible. Android versions of Chrome are being updated with a dual‑bar layout—top bar for navigation controls and a bottom bar that includes a dedicated Gemini shortcut. Wear OS devices, including Pixel Watch, are receiving a new overlay interface that places Gemini over the watch face instead of opening a full‑screen app, mirroring the design on smartphones. An experimental “Device Help” feature is also being tested on Pixel phones, allowing users to describe problems in natural language and receive targeted settings adjustments via Gemini.

These updates aim to integrate Gemini more tightly across Google’s ecosystem while giving users control over storage and privacy implications.
