Google Chrome and Firefox introduce native JPEG XL support
Major web browsers are introducing native support for the JPEG XL image format, aiming to improve web performance and image quality.
Google Chrome 155 has implemented support for JPEG XL, which offers compression rates 30% to 50% more efficient than the standard JPEG format. This update is intended to enhance page loading speeds and provide superior image clarity while reducing security vulnerabilities associated with image decoders.
Similarly, Mozilla has released Firefox 158, which includes native support for JPEG XL enabled by default. The format supports advanced features such as high dynamic range (HDR), high bit depth, animation, and both lossless and progressive encoding. This transition follows a testing period where the format was available as an optional feature in the browser's Labs section.
