Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge require 20GB of disk space for local AI models

Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge have both updated their requirements for downloading local artificial intelligence models, now necessitating approximately 20GB of available disk space.

For Google Chrome, the 20GB requirement serves as a threshold to initiate the download of AI models used for on-device processing, though the actual size of the models is expected to be smaller. Chrome requires an unmetered network connection and sufficient device performance to support these features.

Microsoft Edge shares a similar 20GB storage requirement for the volume containing the user profile. Additionally, Edge specifies hardware requirements including at least 5.5GB of GPU VRAM and compatibility with Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS 13.3 or later. To manage storage, Edge includes an automatic cleanup mechanism that deletes the local AI model if available disk space falls below 10GB.
