Google Chrome resource management: optimizing RAM and storage
Google Chrome users can manage system resources through specific settings to address high RAM and storage consumption. To reduce memory usage, users can enable the ‘Memory Saver’ feature located under Settings > Performance. This tool offers three modes—Mild, Balanced, and Aggressive—to manage how inactive tabs are handled in the system's RAM.
Additionally, Chrome may consume significant disk space on certain devices, such as Macs, by storing a local AI model known as Gemini Nano. This model, which includes a ‘weights.bin’ file of approximately 4 GB, enables on-device AI features like fraud detection and ‘Help Me Write’. To permanently remove this model and reclaim space, users must disable the ‘On-device AI’ toggle in the Chrome System settings, as simply deleting the file may result in Chrome re-downloading it.
