Google ChromeOS Flex provides free alternative for aging PCs
Google offers ChromeOS Flex as a free alternative for users looking to extend the life of older PCs and Macs. This is particularly relevant as Microsoft approaches the end of support for Windows 10 and increases hardware requirements for Windows 11 upgrades.
ChromeOS Flex can be installed on hardware that no longer meets modern Windows requirements, provided the device meets minimum specifications: an Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible architecture, 4 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of internal storage. Users must be able to boot from a USB installer and access BIOS settings. While Google maintains a list of certified models to guarantee core functionality, the software may work on other devices, though hardware components like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or touchscreens may experience compatibility issues.
While Google is reportedly moving toward a hybrid Android and ChromeOS system for new devices, ChromeOS Flex remains a viable option for repurposing aging hardware through 2034.
