Google Cloud trims cybersecurity staff in latest AI‑driven layoffs

Google Cloud has announced layoffs that affect its cybersecurity workforce. The cuts hit the Threat Intelligence Group, one of the company's top security units that regularly publishes research on hackers, as well as staff at Mandiant, the cybersecurity firm Google acquired in 2022, and other members of the Google Cloud organization. The company said the reductions are part of a broader effort to reinvest in growth areas such as artificial intelligence. A Google spokesperson said, “We regularly evaluate our internal structures to ensure we are best positioned to meet the evolving demands of our customers and the industry.”

These layoffs follow a wave of reductions across the technology sector, with firms like Meta, Coinbase, Block and Cloudflare also citing AI‑related strategic shifts as reasons for cutting staff. The exact number of employees impacted at Google Cloud has not been disclosed.
