Google confirmed as parent company for Roanoke County data center
The Western Virginia Regional Industrial Facility Authority has confirmed that Google is the corporate parent behind a planned data center project at Wood Haven Technology Park in Roanoke County. The project involves a purchase agreement for 94 acres of land near the junction of interstates 81 and 581.
John Hull, executive director of the authority, stated that the partnership aims to support jobs, strengthen the regional tax base, and fund community investment. Google’s regional public affairs manager, Clay Allsop, noted the company’s existing relationship with the community following its campus announcement in Botetourt County.
A due diligence process, including engineering, geotechnical, and environmental reviews, is expected to continue through March 2027. The project has faced scrutiny from the Southwest Virginia Data Center Transparency Alliance, a local opposition group that has raised concerns regarding transparency and requested information through Freedom of Information Act filings.
