Google data center project in Austria faces local opposition
Google is constructing a large-scale hyperscale data center near the village of Kronstorf, Austria. If the project reaches its full planned expansion, the complex could consume up to 7 percent of Austria’s total electricity, an amount exceeding the combined energy consumption of all households in Vienna.
The project has met significant local opposition. A coalition of scientists, artists, and activists has launched protests and petitions to block the expansion. Harald Müllner, an IT specialist and co-founder of a local alliance against the facility, stated that the goal is to demonstrate public dissatisfaction and make it difficult for the investor to realize its plans.
This resistance mirrors broader trends across Europe and the United States. While activists in France and Italy are targeting similar projects, and legal challenges in Ireland have failed to stop data centers that already consume one-fifth of the nation's power, European governments remain supportive of such infrastructure. Officials express concern that Europe may fall behind the United States and China in the development of artificial intelligence. The European Union anticipates a tripling of data center capacity by 2035.
