Google data center projects in Finland halted over tree clearing

Google's data center construction projects in Muhos and Kajaani, Finland, have faced scrutiny and temporary halts following reports of large-scale deforestation. Approximately 250,000 trees were reportedly cleared for site preparation before the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was fully completed.

Local residents have reported significant environmental disruptions, including changes in wildlife movement and increased sightings of wolves near settlements, as well as impacts on local waterways. In response to these potential procedural violations, Finnish authorities have imposed a moratorium on further steps to allow for a thorough evaluation of the environmental consequences.

The project, managed by Tuike Finland Oy, is currently under regulatory review. While Google has indicated intentions to implement reforestation and protective measures, the incident has raised broader questions regarding the balance between expanding AI infrastructure and adhering to environmental regulations.
