Google DeepMind AI agents complete Minecraft autonomously
Four artificial intelligence agents powered by Google DeepMind’s Gemini 4 Argon model have successfully completed a Minecraft playthrough from start to finish without human intervention. The agents defeated the Ender Dragon in 27 hours and 14 minutes within a randomly generated survival world on Easy difficulty.
This achievement is noted as the first known instance of general-purpose agents completing the game autonomously without game-specific tools or predefined strategies. Instead of using visual interpretation or keyboard inputs, the agents utilized the Mineflayer JavaScript library to write and execute code for navigation, resource gathering, and combat.
During the session, the agents—identified as gyldenia, bulicame, janesick, and auratian—coordinated tasks by exchanging 229 messages via the in-game chat and maintaining shared notes. The collective effort resulted in the creation of 2,783 JavaScript programs totaling approximately 63,313 lines of code and 42 reusable auxiliary functions. Despite facing 605 deaths and six server restarts, the group successfully identified and destroyed the crystals required to defeat the final boss.
