Google DeepMind disbands AlphaFold team to prioritize Gemini AI
Google DeepMind has dissolved the dedicated AlphaFold team, ending the project that predicts protein structures and earned a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024. The reorganization shifts resources toward Gemini, a broad‑scope generative AI model, and related initiatives in genomics and the Alphabet spin‑off Isomorphic Labs.
Pushmeet Kohli, DeepMind’s vice‑president of research, said the company is moving from single‑challenge teams to a unified technology platform that can serve many scientific domains. The change reflects a wider industry trend of large firms focusing on versatile AI systems to compete with rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
