Google DeepMind employees resign over military AI use

Several employees at Google DeepMind, the artificial intelligence division of Google, have resigned or are in the process of leaving the company due to concerns regarding military contracts. The departures stem from Google’s increasing involvement in providing AI technology for military operations, specifically involving the United States and Israeli armed forces.

Sofia Liguori, a research engineer based in London, resigned after three years, stating she felt “ashamed” to work for a company pushing AI systems into warfare. Similarly, AI researcher Andreas Kirsch left the firm, arguing that Google’s governance and oversight are insufficient to ensure the safe and responsible deployment of AI in military and classified environments.

While Google’s AI Principles mandate human oversight and alignment with international law, former and current employees have expressed skepticism regarding the actual level of control the company maintains over how its technology, such as tools contracted by the Pentagon, is implemented in combat scenarios.
