Google DeepMind launches AlphaGenome Atlas to map 9 billion DNA mutations

Google DeepMind has released the AlphaGenome Atlas, a massive 1-petabyte database that uses artificial intelligence to predict the biological consequences of approximately 9 billion possible single-letter mutations in the human genome. This precomputed resource allows researchers to instantly query the potential impact of genetic variations on molecular processes, such as gene expression and RNA splicing, rather than performing time-consuming manual experiments or individual model runs.

To assist in prioritizing significant mutations, the company introduced the AlphaGenome Variant Impact (AVI) score. This metric integrates predictions from the AlphaGenome and AlphaMissense models to provide a single value representing a variant's potential to disrupt biological functions. The Atlas is particularly valuable for studying the 98% of the human genome that does not code for proteins but plays a critical role in gene regulation.

Early applications of the tool have already yielded results. The Broad Institute used the AVI score to identify a mutation in the DNM1 gene linked to epileptic encephalopathy. Additionally, researchers at the University of Exeter applied the Atlas to UK Biobank data, successfully identifying 19 genomic regions associated with BMI by focusing on high-impact variants.
