Google defends content usage in Brazil antitrust probe
Google has submitted a 108-page defense to Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade) regarding an investigation into its use of journalistic content. The investigation, launched in April, examines whether Google abuses its dominant search market position to utilize news content without providing compensation, particularly through AI-driven features like AI Overviews and AI Mode.
In its defense, Google argues that it provides publishers with sufficient autonomy through tools such as 'nosnippet' and 'max-snippet' tags. The 'nosnippet' tag restricts previews to small static images, while 'max-snippet' limits the number of characters displayed in search results. Google maintains that this level of control is incompatible with claims that publishers lack authority over their content.
These arguments mirror those previously presented to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). However, British regulators rejected Google's position and mandated the development of new tools to allow editors to prevent their content from being used in AI-generated search features.
