Google developing HDR emoji support for Google Chat

Google is reportedly developing support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) emojis for its Google Chat service. The feature was discovered within the code of a recent Gmail APK version, suggesting that the update will be integrated into the communication tools available through the Gmail application.

On compatible displays, such as OLED or advanced LCD screens, HDR emojis would allow specific elements of an icon—such as a flame, lightning bolt, or bright highlight—to appear with significantly higher brightness and contrast compared to standard SDR emojis. This technology focuses on enhancing the visual depth and vibrancy of existing characters rather than introducing new emoji designs.

While the code includes references to an ‘HDR emoji’ setting, Google has not yet officially announced the feature, its release schedule, or the full list of supported emojis. It is expected that the option may appear as a toggle within the Google Chat settings, potentially under the Smart Compose menu.
