Google Docs adds Gemini AI for visual creation and summarization

Google has integrated its Gemini generative‑AI model into Google Docs, allowing users to create images, diagrams and infographics directly within a document. The AI analyses the surrounding text and, on request, generates relevant visuals without leaving the editor. Controls for resizing, styling or applying a uniform look to multiple graphics are accessed through a Gemini side panel or bottom bar. The feature initially launches on the web version and is being rolled out gradually over roughly 15 days to accounts with paid Workspace, Education or Google AI subscriptions.

In addition to visuals, Gemini can read all comments in a Doc, summarize them, group them by author or topic, highlight unresolved discussions and draft replies. It can also suggest document edits based on the feedback and pull relevant Drive files into the response. Drafts and suggestions are presented to the user for approval; no changes are applied automatically.

The update is limited to users on eligible paid plans (Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise, Education Plus, Google AI Pro/Ultra). Free personal accounts do not receive the functionality at this stage. The rollout begins on 28 July 2026 and will reach all qualified users within about two weeks.
