Google Drive ends automatic photo backups to Google Photos

Google has officially discontinued the automatic photo and video backup feature provided by the Google Drive for desktop application. As of August 10, 2026, the integration that allowed users to sync local computer folders directly to Google Photos has been severed.

This change primarily affects Windows and Mac users who rely on the desktop client to automatically upload media from cameras, scanners, or local directories. While standard file synchronization within Google Drive remains unaffected, new media files placed in previously designated folders will no longer be automatically transferred to the Google Photos library.

Existing photos and videos already stored in Google Photos are safe and will not be deleted. To continue backing up local folders, Google recommends that users utilize the web version of Google Photos. Users can use the ‘Back up folders’ feature on the website to select specific directories. However, unlike the background desktop service, this web-based method requires the browser tab or the Google Photos Web App to remain open for the upload process to complete successfully.
