Google Earth AI image generator pulled amid fake‑satellite image concerns
Google added an AI‑driven image‑creation tool, called Nano Banana 2, to the web version of Google Earth on 30 July 2026. The feature let users type prompts that generated photorealistic images layered onto real satellite, aerial and 3D map data, with a built‑in SynthID watermark to mark AI‑generated content.
Within hours, researchers and online users demonstrated that the tool could fabricate convincing scenes of disasters, war zones, nuclear facilities, refugee camps and other sensitive subjects. Screenshots of these fabricated images spread on social media, raising fears that they could be mistaken for authentic satellite imagery and undermine the trust placed in Google Earth as a reliable reference.
Citing policy violations and the risk of misinformation, Google announced on 31 July 2026 that it was temporarily disabling the Nano Banana 2 feature while stronger guardrails are developed. The company emphasized that the decision was driven by the need to protect the platform’s credibility, and it pledged to re‑introduce the tool only after more robust safety measures are in place.
