Google enables third-party AI agents to control smart homes via Home MCP
Google has introduced Home MCP (Model Context Protocol), an early access server that allows third-party AI agents to interact with the Google Home ecosystem. This integration enables external AI models, such as Claude, to view, analyze, and control connected smart devices, provided the user grants explicit authorization.
Supported devices include Google Nest cameras and doorbells, Nest thermostats, and Matter-compatible smart bulbs. Through this protocol, AI agents can perform complex tasks such as summarizing video footage from multiple cameras, analyzing historical usage patterns—like tracking how often appliances were used—and providing voice announcements via Google Home speakers.
While the technology offers advanced automation and personalized control panels, Google has issued warnings regarding potential “unexpected or undesired behaviors.” The company advises users to carefully review the privacy policies of any third-party AI agent before granting access to their home environment. This feature is intended to complement, rather than replace, Gemini for Home.
