Google enhances Android security with theft detection and anti-fraud tools

Google is enhancing Android security through new proactive features designed to combat theft and fraud. Recent updates, including the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 for Pixel devices, introduce motion-sensing theft detection that automatically locks the screen if a device is snatched. Additionally, an Offline Device Lock feature triggers a countdown to secure the device if a thief attempts to disable connectivity by removing the SIM card or enabling Airplane Mode.

To combat digital fraud, Google is implementing protections against call-spoofing and USSD-code-based redirection scams. These measures aim to prevent attackers from executing unauthorized commands via the mobile network. Meanwhile, Meta is testing a ‘Scam Alert’ feature for WhatsApp, which utilizes on-device AI to analyze chat patterns for fraudulent activity without uploading private messages to its servers.

These integrated security layers, such as Google Play Protect—which blocked approximately 27 million malicious apps in 2025—are increasingly making third-party antivirus software redundant for many users. However, the rise of AI-driven phishing, which has seen click rates reach 10% in some studies, continues to drive the need for these advanced, built-in protections.
