Google expands 3D video platform Google Beam to global markets
Google is expanding the availability of Google Beam, its 3D video communication platform formerly known as Project Starline. The technology, which aims to simulate in-person presence through spatial communication, is moving beyond experimental phases and large corporate clients to reach broader markets.
Google has begun shipping Beam units to corporate customers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan. The hardware, marketed as the HP Dimension with Google Beam, is designed to integrate with existing software such as Google Meet and Zoom.
In a new partnership with coworking operator Industrious, Beam technology will be available for booking in Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, and Palo Alto starting this October. An internal Google study indicated that teams using the technology reported a 50% increase in feeling connected and a 21% reduction in the necessity for follow-up meetings.
