OpenAI reportedly plans to purchase Google AI chips
OpenAI is reportedly planning to purchase Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to reduce its heavy reliance on Nvidia hardware. While OpenAI has previously rented Google's chips for testing, this move would signal a strategic shift toward owning specialized AI hardware.
This development comes as Google expands the availability of its TPUs. A recent partnership with Oracle will make Google’s TPUs available to Oracle Cloud customers starting next year, marking the first time Google has offered its custom chips on a third-party hyperscaler platform.
Nvidia remains a dominant player in the market, with OpenAI being one of its largest customers. However, the potential shift toward Google's hardware, alongside efforts by OpenAI to develop its own custom chips with Broadcom, highlights an industry-wide trend toward multi-chip strategies to manage supply and costs.
