Google expands AI Overviews to automatically display full search summaries
Google is expanding its AI Overviews feature within its search engine, moving toward a more automated AI-centric interface. For certain search queries, the company is now dynamically expanding AI-generated summaries to their full length, effectively removing the 'Show More' button that previously required user interaction.
This update also includes the automatic loading of an 'Ask anything' box, encouraging users to engage in follow-up prompts directly within the AI interface. Google VP of Product for AI Search, Robby Stein, stated that these expansions occur dynamically only when systems determine it to be most useful for a specific topic. To maintain user experience, the automatic expansion ceases if a user begins to scroll.
The change has drawn criticism from publishers and SEO specialists. By providing comprehensive answers directly on the search results page, the feature pushes traditional organic links further down the page, potentially reducing click-through rates to original content sources.
