Google expands AI Scam Detection for Pixel and potentially Xiaomi devices

Google is expanding its AI-powered Scam Detection feature, which uses on-device processing to identify potential fraudulent activity. For Pixel 6 and newer models, notification-based scam alerts are being rolled out to several countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, and Singapore. These alerts can warn users of a “Likely scam” before they even open a suspicious message.

Additionally, Google is integrating Scam Detection into Gboard, its keyboard application. This provides a second layer of protection by displaying a warning above the keyboard if the AI identifies a suspicious conversation while a user is composing a reply. While notification detection is expanding globally, Gboard-based detection is initially restricted to the US.

Reports also indicate that the technology may soon extend beyond Pixel devices. Code found in the Google Phone app beta suggests that Xiaomi smartphones may be added to the list of compatible manufacturers, potentially bringing these AI security tools to a wider range of Android users.
