Google expands Android 17 Advanced Protection Suite

Google has expanded its Advanced Protection Suite for the Android 17 operating system by adding six new security features designed to prevent unauthorized access and tampering.

A key addition is Intrusion Logging, which allows users to optionally back up security and network logs to the cloud. These logs are end-to-end encrypted, tamper-proof, and accessible only by the user. Data is stored on a rolling 12-month basis before being automatically deleted. Google collaborated with organizations such as Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders during the development of this feature to assist users who may be targets of sophisticated attacks, such as journalists or public figures.

Additionally, the update introduces USB Protection. When a device is locked, this feature restricts new USB connections to charging only, blocking data transfer to prevent unauthorized access via manipulated or unknown USB devices.
