Google updates Play Store for cars and prepares Android Auto redesign

Google is rolling out significant updates to its automotive and gaming ecosystems. For vehicles with Google built-in (Android Automotive), the Google Play Store is receiving a redesigned interface. This new layout automatically adapts to various screen shapes and sizes, featuring streamlined navigation and curated collections. New compatible apps, including Firefox, Starz, and JioHotstar, are being added. Additionally, YouTube Premium users will be able to watch videos while parked and continue listening to audio in the background while driving.

In the gaming sector, Google Play is introducing several discovery and engagement tools. These include a personalized ‘Game Finder’ based on ‘Gamer DNA’, 48-hour competitive ‘Sprints’, and the ‘Sidekick’ in-game overlay which allows for 30-second gameplay recordings. Google is also enabling users to create private, custom Android apps using Google AI Studio.

Concurrently, developers have identified work on a major Android Auto redesign codenamed ‘Cielo’. This update is expected to replace the current ‘Coolwalk’ interface, introducing more flexible layouts, widgets, and deeper integration of the Gemini AI assistant to provide personalized information from services like Gmail and Google Calendar.
