Google expands Play Age Signals API to Australia, Canada and worldwide
Google announced that its Play Age Signals API, first piloted in Brazil in early 2026, will be rolled out to Australia and Canada by mid‑August 2026. The company says the tool will reach all Google Play markets worldwide by the end of 2026.
The API supplies apps only with an age range – 0‑12, 13‑15, 16‑17 or 18+ – instead of a precise birthdate. Parents can opt‑in to share their child’s age band through the Google Family Link app; the sharing is optional and can be changed or disabled at any time. The signal is intended solely for age‑appropriate content and safety settings and cannot be used for advertising, profiling or analytics. Misuse may result in loss of access to the API and removal of the app from the Play Store.
The expansion responds to growing regulatory pressure, including U.S. state laws in Texas, Utah and Louisiana that require app stores to verify users’ ages. Google positions the rollout as part of a broader safety suite that also includes screen‑time limits, download approvals and content filters for families.
