Google extends ChromeOS Flex support until 2034

Google has announced that its ChromeOS Flex operating system will receive regular security updates until 2034. This initiative aims to extend the lifespan of older PCs and Macs, providing an alternative for hardware that may no longer support modern operating systems like Windows 11.

To run ChromeOS Flex, devices require a 64-bit Intel or AMD x86 processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. The system must also be capable of booting from USB media and allow access to BIOS or UEFI settings. While the software is designed to be lightweight, Google notes potential stability issues with processors manufactured before 2012 and Nvidia graphics cards produced before 2014.

Users can install the system via a USB installer. While Google maintains a list of certified models to guarantee full functionality of components like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and audio, many other devices may still work with varying degrees of success.
