Google faces legal injunctions over AI-generated misinformation
German courts are increasingly addressing legal liability regarding misinformation generated by Google’s artificial intelligence.
In Aachen, the District Court (Landgericht Aachen) issued an injunction against Google Ireland Limited, prohibiting the company from displaying false statements about a medical professional in its search “AI mode.” The court ruled that Google is liable for AI-generated content as if it were its own statement. Failure to comply with the injunction could result in fines of up to 250,000 euros. The case arose after Google’s AI incorrectly attributed criminal proceedings to a doctor that actually concerned a different individual.
Similarly, in Bremen, lawyer Michael Zinke reported that Google’s Gemini AI falsely identified him as a defendant in fraud and embezzlement cases. The AI provided incorrect details regarding his professional license and suggested upcoming criminal charges. These incidents highlight the risks of AI-driven search summaries incorrectly linking individuals to legal proceedings through erroneous data associations.
