Google faces €890 million EU fine and billions in competitor lawsuits

The European Commission fined Google €890 million under the Digital Markets Act for giving its own services preferential treatment in search results and the Play Store, a penalty split into €460 million for search‑related violations and €430 million for Play‑Store violations. The fine represents less than 0.3 % of Alphabet’s annual revenue.

At the same time, a wave of private lawsuits by European competitors is seeking further compensation. Germany’s price‑comparison site Idealo was awarded €465 million by a Berlin court; Sweden’s PriceRunner secured roughly $1.97 billion in damages; Italy’s Moltiply Group is demanding €2.97 billion; and the UK‑based Kelkoo claims several billion pounds. Collectively, the claims could total tens of billions of dollars, with Reuters reporting potential damages of up to $10 billion. These actions follow earlier EU antitrust fines on Google that total €10.4 billion.
