Google faces privacy concerns over automatic phone verification

Google is facing privacy concerns regarding its automatic phone number verification process on Android devices. The feature automatically links a user's phone number to every signed-in Google account on a device, including secondary work profiles or alternate accounts. While intended to facilitate account recovery, RCS messaging, and emergency services, the lack of an explicit opt-in prompt has led users to report receiving unexpected verification emails.

Users can attempt to disable this feature by navigating to Settings > Google > All services > Phone number verification and turning off “Verify phone numbers automatically,” though some reports suggest the setting may revert to being enabled.

Separately, phone verification remains a requirement for unlocking intermediate features on YouTube. Verified accounts gain access to capabilities such as uploading videos longer than 15 minutes, adding custom thumbnails, live streaming from a computer, and creating podcasts. YouTube limits phone verification to a maximum of two channels per year per phone number.
