Google faces scrutiny over $10 million Spirit Airlines data acquisition

Google is facing significant opposition from U.S. lawmakers regarding its proposal to purchase a $10 million corporate data archive from the bankrupt Spirit Airlines. The dataset, intended to train Google’s generative artificial intelligence systems, includes approximately 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, and sensitive employee records such as payroll, tax details, and employment contracts.

A bipartisan coalition of over 100 lawmakers, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Steven Horsford, has raised concerns about worker privacy. Legislators and labor groups, including the Association of Flight Attendants, warn that AI systems may be capable of re-identifying individuals even if data is anonymized.

In response to these concerns, a bankruptcy court has postponed the judicial hearing on the sale from October 14 to November 6. Google has defended the legality of the deal, stating that all data will undergo a rigorous anonymization process by an independent third party to ensure no personally identifiable information is used to improve its AI models.
