Google tests Gemini AI commerce in India and automated calling in the US

Google is expanding its AI capabilities through two major experimental features: agentic commerce in India and the 'Call for Me' assistant in the United States.

In India, Google is piloting a feature within Gemini and Search's AI Mode that allows select users to purchase Flipkart products directly through the interface. By using a 'Buy' button, users can access a Flipkart-branded checkout without leaving the AI environment. This initiative is powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard introduced in January 2026 to facilitate standardized communication between AI agents and retailers. The pilot currently focuses on electronics and mobile accessories, with a broader rollout expected later in October 2026.

In the United States, Google is testing 'Call for Me' for Pixel 11 users with Gemini subscriptions. This feature enables the AI assistant to make phone calls to businesses on behalf of users to handle routine tasks such as booking restaurant reservations, checking product availability, or rescheduling appointments. The assistant can navigate automated phone menus and wait on hold. To ensure transparency, Gemini identifies itself as an AI assistant at the start of each call and provides users with real-time transcripts, allowing them to monitor the conversation or intervene at any time.
