Google Home Speaker cuts adhesive by 99% to boost repairability and recycling
Google’s recent environmental report details a major redesign of its new Home Speaker, branded with the Gemini AI model. The device now uses a tensioned 3D‑knit fabric enclosure that eliminates adhesive, achieving a 99% reduction in glue compared with the previous Nest Audio. Material usage falls by roughly 63%, and at least 37% of the speaker’s weight comes from recycled plastics, metals and rare‑earth components.
The redesign replaces permanent bonding with mechanical fasteners and snap‑fit parts, allowing the speaker to be disassembled with standard tools. This modular approach is intended to improve repairability, enable component replacement, and streamline material recovery at end‑of‑life. Power is supplied by a 30 W USB‑C adapter that meets DOE Level VI efficiency standards. Google says the changes support its 2024 sustainability goals and anticipate forthcoming regulations in the European Union and United States concerning product durability and right‑to‑repair.
Packaging also shifts to renewable materials such as bamboo, molded fiber and recycled newsprint. While the design advances recyclability, the report notes the USB‑C cable remains permanently attached, a point critics say could further limit repair options.
