Google expands Gemini AI to students and integrates new apps

Google is expanding its Gemini AI chatbot to students in K-12 education via the Google Classroom platform. Previously restricted to users aged 18 and older, the update allows students of various ages to use the tool for assistance with mathematics, essay writing, and creating study guides or quizzes. School administrators maintain control, as they must authorize access to Gemini or Gemini Notebook for their students.

Simultaneously, Google is increasing Gemini's utility by integrating it with over ten new applications, including productivity tools like Otter.ai and Wix, and lifestyle services such as OpenTable and Ticketmaster. While these integrations offer significant benefits for users in regions like the US and UK, the impact for users in other regions may be more limited.

In terms of regulation, the European Commission has issued strict transparency guidelines to combat disinformation and fraud. These rules, aligned with the EU AI Act, require companies to clearly disclose when users are interacting with AI agents and mandate machine-readable labels for synthetic content, including text, images, and audio.

Furthermore, Google has announced it will allow users to remove visible watermarks from AI-generated images starting in August 2026. While invisible signatures like SynthID and C2PA metadata will remain mandatory to ensure traceability, the removal of visible marks has raised concerns regarding the ability of average users to distinguish between real and synthetic media.
