Google Gemini replaces Gems with new Skills automation feature
Google is replacing its Gemini ‘Gems’ feature with a new tool called ‘Skills’ (or ‘Competenze’ in Italian), starting November 17. Unlike the previous custom assistants that functioned in isolation, Skills can be summoned within any active conversation using a forward slash (/) command.
A key advancement of this update is the ability to chain Skills together to create automation sequences. Users can combine multiple instructions to perform complex workflows, such as conducting research with one Skill, formatting the output with another, and then exporting the result to Gmail or Google Docs.
Skills can be created manually through settings or by describing the desired behavior directly to the AI. This system aims to reduce repetitive prompting by allowing users to save specific instructions and call them instantly when needed.
