Google Gemma open AI models surpass 1 billion downloads

Google's Gemma family of open-weight artificial intelligence models has surpassed one billion cumulative downloads. Since its launch in early 2024, developers have created more than 100,000 distinct variations of the models, tailored for specific languages, tasks, and hardware.

The ecosystem, referred to by Google as the ‘Gemmaverse,’ has seen diverse applications across various sectors. In space exploration, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, along with companies like Satlyt and Starcloud, have utilized Gemma for in-orbit image analysis and satellite communication routing.

In the medical and scientific fields, the models have been integrated into India’s National Health Authority’s Aarogya Setu 2.0 app for processing medical reports. Additionally, researchers at Yale University used a Gemma-based model to assist in analyzing single cells for cancer treatment research, while specialized versions like MedGemma and DolphinGemma have been developed for clinical and biological sound processing applications.
