Google granted permission to expand Dublin data center
An Coimisiún Pleanála has granted planning permission for Google to expand its data center campus at Grange Castle Business Park in south Dublin. This decision overturns a previous veto by the South Dublin County Council in August 2024, which had cited concerns regarding regional electricity grid capacity and a lack of on-site renewable energy.
The approved expansion involves a 72,400sq m facility. As part of the permission, Google must adhere to strict environmental mandates, including ensuring all backup generators operate on renewable fuel and implementing measures to enhance the site’s ecological value. The company is also required to encourage staff to use public transport, walking, or cycling.
While the approval allows the project to proceed, the decision remains subject to potential judicial review, which could impact the timeline for construction.
