Google integrates AI into Discover and news carousels

Google is implementing several artificial intelligence-driven updates across its news and discovery platforms, including Search, Discover, and Google News.

In AI Mode, Google has activated link carousels for developing topics. This format highlights recent articles through cards containing images, titles, sources, and dates, helping users find information on unfolding events. The system also integrates user-selected ‘Preferred Sources’ to connect editorial loyalty with content discovery.

Google Discover is shifting from a purely algorithmic model to one that accepts natural language requests. Users can now provide detailed instructions via text to explain exactly what subjects, sources, or formats they wish to see or avoid in their feed. Additionally, publishers are receiving a new ‘Preferred Sources’ button to help readers connect with specific sites. For Android users, Google News is enhancing its audio briefings by allowing more personalized topic selection.
