Google introduces Sheets Canvas to transform spreadsheets into interactive mini-apps

Google has introduced Sheets Canvas, a new feature that utilizes Gemini AI to transform raw spreadsheet data into interactive, visual mini-apps without the need for coding or complex formulas. This tool acts as a dynamic, read-write layer positioned directly above existing spreadsheet data, allowing users to create dashboards, Kanban boards, study trackers, or seating charts through simple natural language prompts.

Key functionality includes real-time synchronization; any changes made within the Canvas interface are immediately reflected in the original Google Sheet, and vice versa. This allows for a more intuitive way to manage complex information through cards, filters, and drag-and-drop interfaces rather than traditional rows and columns.

The rollout began on August 10, 2026, and is currently available on the web for English-language spreadsheets. Access is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as Google Workspace users with Business, Enterprise, Standard, or Plus plans.
