Google introduces Motion Assist to combat motion sickness on Android
Google is introducing a new native Android feature called Motion Assist to help users combat motion sickness, also known as kinetosis, while using mobile devices in moving vehicles. The feature, which will be included in Android 17, is set to roll out initially on Pixel smartphones.
Motion Assist works by displaying subtle, colored moving shapes, or 'Bubbles', at the edges of the device screen. These shapes move in alignment with the direction of the vehicle's turns, providing the brain with visual cues that match the physical movement of the journey. This helps bridge the sensory gap between what the eyes see on a screen and the actual motion of the vehicle.
Users will have the ability to customize the shape, color, and opacity of these visual aids. The feature can be set to activate automatically when a trip is detected or added to quick settings. This move brings Android in line with Apple, which has offered a similar feature for iPhone and iPad users since the release of iOS 18 in 2024.
